Note: This article was published on October 15th, 2016. The events listed in this article are centered around the events that occurred during that period of time only.

In this digital age of technology, if you look around, you will notice a lot of things that happen on a daily basis, A few of those to list would be

  1. The festival of Navratri
  2. Dussehra( Vijayadashami)
  3. Unified Transport System in Mumbai
  4. India — Pakistan

And many more.

Considering India, Many events have happened in this month itself which are worth keeping track of. A few to list would be as follows:

  1. The festival of Navratri

Navratri in simple terms means Nine Nights. It is a festival dedicated to Goddess Durga, in which each of her nine different forms(avatars) are worshipped, with each avatar having a special meaning. During the festival people worship and dance in circles(Garba and Dandiya) to special beats with the Goddess in center signifying the Hindu cycle of Time(Birth — to Life — To Death and again to Rebirth). This time the festival was a little bit more special, since after a period of 16 years, it spanned for a total of 10 days.

2. Dussehra( Vijayadashami)

The day immediately after the festival of Navratri is known as Dussehra. It signifies two major events that have happened:
1. The victory of Lord Ram over Ravan
2. The victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasur, after fighting for 10 days and 9 nights.

The festival signifies the win of Good over evil. On this day effigies of Ravan are built and then burnt down to ashes. The burning also signifies the destruction of evil from within oneself and resulting in purifying one. A more scientific reason believed is after Dussehra, the hot summer ends (especially in North India) and the onset of cold weather is believed to encourage infections. The burning of the effigies, filled with firecrackers containing phosphorus, supposedly purifies the atmosphere.

The burning signifies the destruction of evil from within oneself and being purified in the process.

3. Unified Transport System in Mumbai

Recently the MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority) announced a single unified system for its Buses, Metro, Monorail, thereby linking both the transport systems. When implemented, this system would enable the user to commute faster between different parts of the cities and removing the hassle about thinking of different tickets and standing in long queues to buy one. It would even help the authorities in tracking the commuting trends and appropriately develop new routes in the system. London(Oyster Card) and Dubai(Nol Card) being very good examples of how the system has flourished.

4. India — Pakistan

Recently, the news and social media were filled with information about increasing tensions between India and Pakistan. The news showing articles about terror attacks on Indian army camps(URI, Pathankot), Indian surgical strike on Terror Camps across the border(and Arvind Kejriwal asking for proof), to Pakistan weighing on Nuclear weapons, India boycotting the SAARC summit and threatening to discard the Indus Water Treaty(Which governs rule about the water usage from the trans-border river Indus between India and Pakistan) and in turn news about China blocking a tributary of the Brahmaputra. Amid this tension also lies the CPEC(China-Pakistan Economic Corridor), which has come to much more lime-light since the tensions have increased. Later on, hackers from both countries came into the news by hacking various websites of the other country.
